HDS on the 8 Ultimates at the start of the 2014 Route du Rhum
HDS worked on all eight Ultimates lining up at the start of the 10th Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe. These maxi-trimarans, designed mainly for crewed sailing, have had to be adapted for this single-handed transat. HDS’ challenge, in cooperation with teams and architects, was to study solutions to adapt the platforms, masts and appendages so that these powerful boats could be skippered safely by just one person, while at the same time optimizing their performance.
Sodebo Ultimate: a real challenge!
The HDS team worked in collaboration with VPLP in Vannes and the Sodebo team to transform the boat formerly called Geronimo. Their mission was to adapt the trimaran for a single-handed sailing project. Using the existing structure, many components were modified: new central hull, modified floats, crossbeam reinforcements, foils, daggerboards and rudders. One of the challenges was to manage to combine sailing comfort and performance.
Maxi80 Prince de Bretagne: an urgent new mast
Maxi80 Prince de Bretagne capsized last January off the coast of Brazil. HDS’ mission was to launch the conception of a new mast in record time! Studies on the mast had already started while Lionel was still awaiting rescue.

Now working with Artemis towards the next America’s Cup, they are working on several fronts, including the appendages. Part of the HDS team is working directly with the Artemis design team.
HDS was in charge of designing reduced model for the Hydros HY-X project to validate the concept for this avant-garde foil-engine boat.
The HDS team is currently working on the new Spindrift mast, in collaboration with GSea Design, with a view to the Trophée Jules Verne. This will be a unique new mast as it is specially designed, and not based on existing studies or moulds. It will be built by CDK Technologie in Port-Laforet. Other projects in progress include the future Maxi-Trimaran Macif and the keels for the new IMOCA jauge.
