October 24th 2009 saw the ground breaking ceremony taking place at Çeşme Marina, located on the beautiful Izmir Peninsula, in the Aegean.
Çeşme Marina, a joint investment of Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, world leader in the yachting and marina operations sector, and IC Ibrahim Çeçen Holding, one of Turkey´s major investment companies, has leased the marina for 25 years under the "build-operate-transfer" scheme. Construction is expected to take eight months with the opening scheduled for May 2010.
In attendance at the ground breaking ceremony were Nick Maris, chairman of Camper & Nicholsons Marinas together with Turkish Transport Minister Binali Yildirim, Çeşme Marina President Ibrahim Çeçen, and Board Member Serhat Çeçen.
"Turkey, with its incomparable coastline and long history of seafaring, is one of the most important yachting areas in the Mediterranean. Camper & Nicholsons and IC see Çeşme as a first step in investing in the marina sector of Turkey, and we look forward to being involved in further projects."
IC Holding and IC Çeşme Marina Board Member Serhat Çeçen says of the new investment, "The Çeşme Marina project is very important for both IC Holding and our partners Camper & Nicholsons. Our confidence in the project has prompted us to go ahead as planned, in spite of the current economic climate.
"Following the groundbreaking, we will completely refurbish the existing yacht harbour with high quality materials, creating a fully-equipped marina built to international standards and which will meet fully all of our clients´ requirements. With the help of our partners´ extensive experience in the yachting sector, we hope to make Çeşme Marina the most popular marina in Turkey and the entire Mediterranean."
Çeşme Marina offers access to one of the world´s most beautiful cruising grounds. The marina is set in a natural harbour and, when complete will provide 400 berths up to 60m in length.
The investment value of the Çeşme Marina Project is 12,000,000 Euro. The total project area is 34,500 sq m. Buildings for marina services and commercial use amount to 7,500 sq m. Çeşme Marina´s architectural plans have been prepared by Atelier Xavier Bohl and Ayyapı Architects with attention being paid to the historical and cultural inheritance of the Çeşme area.
All marine technical facilities will be provided and services will include fuel as well as fresh water and electricity. An 80 ton travel hoist will also be available for haul-out, along with technical support for yacht maintenance, engine repairs and electronics.
Shoreside investment will see shops, sports and health centres, yacht clubs, restaurants and bars on-site - which will position Çeşme as a hub for luxury yachting in the Eastern Mediterranean.
As an ideal location with access to spectacular areas in the Aegean - Chios, Samos and Lesvos are all close enough for a weekend cruise - Cesme is also perfect for day sailing to more local quiet and secluded anchorages.
The marina is a 45 minute drive from an international airport in Izmir and is located right at the western end of the Izmir peninsula with easy access 24 hours a day in all weather conditions. Once there, windsurfing, golf and scuba diving are available nearby and schools for these activities are readily accessible throughout the day.
There are many historical and cultural sites to visit within easy reach of the marina and an excursion to try the healing and restorative properties of the hot springs and spas is an attractive option.
